A Clinical Radiological Study to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Temporomandibular Joint Arthrocentesis by using Double Syringes Technique in Patients with Disc Displacement with or without Reduction of Articular Disc
Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of Temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis using normal saline (0.9%) in improving symptoms and signs of related functional disorders (around ear pain, decreased mouth opening).
Aim of study was to evaluate the effectiveness of TMJ arthrocentesis in treatment patients with internal disorders of articular disc, the sample included 20 patients who attended oral maxillofacial surgery department in Tishreen University Hospital and have been diagnosed with anterior disc displacement with or without reduction.
The diagnosis has been confirmed with magnetic resonance imaging for all patients, Arthrocentesis by double syringes technique was applied and normal saline was used as washout fluid, studied variables (pain at rest and mouth opening), was measured at 4 times: (before treatment, after week, after month, after 3 months), Average pain levels was decreased after (week, month, 3 months), than before treatment by (65%, 52.5%, 32.5%), respectively, in the sample of disc displacement with reduction ,While average pain levels was decreased after (week, month, 3 months), than before treatment by (40%, 48%, 45.33%), respectively, in the sample of disc displacement without reduction.
Conclusion: TMJ arthrocentesis by double syringes technique has proved its effectiveness in relieving symptoms of functional disorders of TMJ especially pain and decreased mouth opening.
