Evaluation of the results of the surgical intervention by Flaps or Grafts in reconstruction of nasal skin defects.
Abstract
Background: Nasal reconstruction is considered as one of the difficult reconstructive problems. That is due to the importance of the cosmetic appearance of nose and complexity of the anatomy. Many types of cutaneous grafts and flaps were designed; nevertheless, management of nasal defects can be often challenging.
Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate reconstruction of cutaneous nasal defects with skin grafts versus flaps. In addition to, to determine cosmetic and functional results of each method.
Patients and Methods: Comparative Prospective Study conducted for the period one years(2019-2020) at Tishreen University Hospital in Lattakia-Syria. 45 patients with nasal cutaneous defect who underwent to nasal reconstruction by using flaps(35 patients) or grafts(10 patients) were included in the study.
Results : Mean age was 66.3±9.8 years, 53.3% were females, and Fitzpatrick skin type III was the most frequent. Flaps were more commonly applied on the nasal alar (34.3%), grafts were more frequently in sidewall(60%), without significant difference regard to defect size and number of affected units. Mean VAS was higher in flaps compared to grafts, the best VAS value for flaps was in nasal dorsal 77±8, and for grafts in nasal tip 55±3. The best esthetic and functional results were obtained in flaps, and satisfactory results was higher in flaps(94%) compared to grafts(70%) .
Conclusion: With presence of different reconstructive methods, flaps may be more likely to result in best cosmetic and functional outcomes.
