Prevalence of intestinal parasites among patients at Tishreen University Hospital in Lattakia
Abstract
Intestinal parasitic diseases are among the most prevalent diseases around the world. Even today, It is still one of the most important health problems that suffer from in developing countries today, due to economic and social conditions, poor sanitation and inadequate hygiene.
The aim of this research is to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in Lattakia and to identify the most prevalent parasitic species.
The research included 1871 patients aged (1-80) years who attended Tishreen University Hospital during the period from 2017 to 2021.
The prevalence rate of intestinal parasites was 26%. The study showed that Entamoeba histolytica is the most common intestinal parasite (51%) . A significant increase in the prevalence rate was observed in children (56%) compared to adults (23%).
