Challenges of caring for patients with COVID-19: a qualitative study.
Abstract
Introduction: Caregivers played an important role during the COVID-19 pandemic, and they had to take responsibility for caring for patients even though their health and lives were at risk.
Objective: The study aimed to reveal the challenges that caregivers faced while caring for patients with the emerging coronavirus-19.
Research Materials and Methods: This study is qualitative with a descriptive phenomenological design. Data were collected through in-depth individual semi-structured interviews with 15 caregivers (10 nurses, 5 physicians). They were selected using the purposive sampling method from the isolation departments of Al-Haffa Hospital and Tishreen University Hospital in Lattakia during the period between July 10-December 10, 2022. The data were analyzed using the (Colizzi) method
Results: The results of the current study identified five main categories that reflected the challenges that caregivers faced while caring for patients with the emerging coronavirus-19, namely: problems related to the use of personal protective equipment, feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, increased work pressure, psychological and emotional problems, and Inadequate support..
Conclusion and Recommendations: Caregivers have faced many challenges while caring for COVID-19 patients. These challenges negatively affected the performance and efficiency of caregivers, and thus negatively affected the quality of care provided to patients. Therefore, they recommend conducting further studies on the impact of a training program for dealing with health crises on the ability of caregivers to face the challenges they may face. The awareness of these challenges by health care systems helps in finding appropriate solutions to these problems and thus improving the quality of care provided to patients. Therefore, this study recommends conducting further research on the relationship between the support provided by health care systems and the quality of care provided to patients.
