Background: Sutures are the most commonly used method for closing wounds inside the mouth; however, the complications associated with them have prompted the search for new methods and materials. One of these materials that has shown promising results is tissue adhesive (cyanoacrylate).
Objective: This research aims to compare tissue adhesive and traditional sutures in terms of healing and patient satisfaction after surgical treatment for periodontal pocket (open flap debridement).
Materials and Methods: The study included 20 surgical sites in 10 adult patients (4 females and 6 males) from the Department of Periodontology at the Faculty of Dentistry, Tishreen University. A split-mouth technique was used, dividing each jaw into two equal halves. To compare the tissue adhesive group and the traditional suture group, healing indices and patient satisfaction scores were utilized.
Results: The healing index results indicated a statistically significant difference between the two groups in both the inflammatory phase (after 5 days) and the proliferative phase (after 14 days), with the tissue adhesive group performing better. But in the remodeling phase (after 6 weeks), the results were similar between the two groups.
there were differences in patient satisfaction scores between the adhesive and suture groups at the 5-day, 14-day, and 6-week intervals, favoring the tissue adhesive group.
Conclusions: The study concluded that initial healing is better when using cyanoacrylate compared to silk sutures after flap closure during open flap debridement.
particularly after 5 and 14 days, and that the use of tissue adhesive provides patients with greater satisfaction and less pain due to the absence of needle prick.
