Abstract
There are numbers of studies which advocate oral azithromycin as important and effective antibiotic for the treatment of inflammatory acne, and want to investigate that with clinical trial. Our study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of azithromycin and to compare it with other antibiotics.
This non – randomized controlled trial was conducted on 180 outpatients with inflammatory acne. They were divided into 5 equal groups. Patients were treated with tetracyclin, minocyclin, doxycyclin, and erythromycin, the most commonly prescribed oral antibiotics used to treat acne 5 groups. Patient received azithromycin 500 mg / day on 3 consecutive days per week. Clinical assessment was done at 2-weeks intervals up to 8 weeks.
Results showed there was 86.11 % improvement in azithromycin treated group in comparison to ( 83.33 %, 80.55 %, 83.33 %, 50% ) in the other groups, the incidence and severity of side effects were also lower with azithromycin.
Conclusion: the results show that azithromycin is a safe and effective alternative in the treatment of inflammatory acne with few side effects and good compliance
