Abstract
The dentition is often considered to reflect the functional status of chewing and nutrition. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between aging and tooth loss in Syrian cost. Tooth loss and need for extraction were explored for a total of 2312 dental patients (1228 males and 1084 females) aged between 18 and 74 years. Complete tooth loss in patients aged 35 years and older was 20.61%, whereas it was 58.44% for patients aged 65 years and older. The mean number of remaining teeth in dentate patients aged 35 years and older was 20.33%; where the mean number of remaining teeth decreased in each older group. In 35-44-year-old patients, only 8.44% had not lost at least one permanent tooth. There was no significant difference as for the average of lost teeth between males and females.
This study provides evidence that tooth loss remains a substantial problem along the Syrian coast area, and there is undoubtedly a correlation between aging and tooth loss.
